Practical 8 and 9 Reflections

0958 in the morning

On the first encounter of this website, my impression is that the purpose is not clearly stated. Whether it is an educational, business/marketing or entertainment. There is no clear standing. All the information just pours out of this website. Smithsonian Institution being the world’s largest museum complex and research organization had a very comprehensive website, regarding its museum. Besides that, the site has other links to art and design, history and culture, science and technology, which give the audience a full range of information. On general, the website takes a long time to load fully, as there are way too many images and text throughout this website. Despite the neat/grid-like presentation and arrangement, the website have too many images and text going on, which look very un-presentable, the layout uses dull and unappealing colours such as olive, dirty green. For such complicated website, it should have a site map or a tool in helping through the navigation. Overall, the website has ineffective navigation and is not user-friendly, hard to communicate to the viewers and leave a bad impression.

Through the process of developing the UIR Portfolio. I learnt that in the world of Internet has many information that we can get, but we have identify the purpose of each website to help us achieve the most relevant information for our reseach. The most important lesson I learnt is how to evaluate a website through the 8 criteria. Using this evaluation criteria, I'm able to get a conclusion on wheather is the sources revelant to me and the values of the information. Besides this, I am able to identify and compares different types of evaluation criteria on different occasions, and select relevant criteria for different resources. With the help of evaluation tools such as checklist/rating tools, kitemarks and metadata, I am more confident on selecting the most relevant website for my research in the near future.

Practical 7 Reflection

1446 in the afternoon

This practical enables me to evaluate selected Internet resources based on identified criteria.

This practical provide me with more practice on how to evaluate a website in an accurate way. Through much practices, I realise that websites have different purposes in what the sites is trying to deliever the information across. Identifying the right purpose of the website will enhance our results in our research in the future.

Different website have different ways of delivering the message across to the audience, some webpages like http://www.scdaarchitects.com/web/index.html uses powerful tools of visual communication using Flash Plug-in software. While some websites just use html codes and achieves simple and oraganise webpage layout. Some of theres are, http://www.bldgblog.blogspot.com/ and http://www.architectureweek.com/topics/home.html.

The problems encounter while doing this practical is the crtitria 'authority'. Many website does not provide the publisher, hence we are not sure whether the source/information is accurate. Therefore we need to do cross referencing with books/magazine or other official website to support the information we gathered.

Hence, after this practical, I'm more confident in searching for website in the future, whether it is applicable to me, and select the relevant criteria to achieve the best and accurate evaluation.

Practical 6 Reflection

0014 in the early morn

This practical enables me to evaluate selected Internet resources based on identified criteria.

After completing practical 6, i realise that it is important to identify the problems with internet information. We need to evaluate the resources we retrived on the net. How do we evaluate? In this practical, we learnt that there are 8 criteria to evaluate.

Through this practical, various problems I encountered is identifying whats the purpose of this website, whether the objective is clearly stated. Some website may have more than one purpose (too much information), which made viewers confuse on what this website is trying to say. Having to know the purpose of a website is important as to our research, whether the information given is really what we want. Another problems I faced is identifying the authority. I noticed that a lot of the website doesn't state the publisher of the site or the sponsors/funding agencies of the site. Whether the information given is reliable. My approch to this problems I encountered is by doing cross-referencing to other sources, like design magazine/books or other media. To make sure both informations tally.

I also learnt that not all the evaluation criteria apply to all websites. We need to select the relevant criteria to achieve the best and accurate evaluation.

Practical 4 & 5 Reflection

2334 in the night

This practical is about identifying the different search facilities.

Search engine I used is Google, keywords are residential and architecture. URL: http://www.architectureweek.com/topics/home.html. (News) The size of hit is 4,690,000. The results shown contain many relevant results relating to residential architecture. The layout of web pages using repetitive primary colors such as blue and green. Blue for the homepage title, green for the URL and black for the summary of the web page. The presentation is very straightforward and clear, the results on the left and the features have a column of sponsored links on the right.

Meta search engine I used is DogPile, keywords are developments, residential and architecture. URL: http://trendsideas.com/Default.aspx?region=1. (Business/marketing) The size of hit is 64. The results shown contain almost all relevant website to the keywords, developments, residential, architecture. The web pages layout also used colours like light navy blue and green, blue for the results and green for the URL. Dogpile using cute graphic and their brand font is more kiddy fonts. The presentation is simple and clear cut. The feature is just a column on the right displaying recent searches.

Subject directory I used is Yahoo's directory, keywords developments and architecture. URL: http://www.mdm-corp.com/. (Business/marketing) The size of hit is 295. The results shown contain little relevant website. There is no relevant ranking. The layout of the website is simple, easy to read. The web pages layout also used colours like blue and green, blue for the results and green for the URL. For directory, they have a “relate directory categories” features.

Reflections

Through the practical of identifying the difference between search facilities, I realise that different search facilities give me different results and purposes. For general topic like architecture, it is good that I used meta search engine as it will narrow down to useful and very relevant website. I also learn that all 3 facilities shared the same webpage layout of using repetitive primary colors such as blue and green. Blue for the homepage title, and green for the URL. Subject directory is convenience to browse and most effective way. You can find your way through a hierarchy of topics. From this activity, I learn that the effectiveness of different search facilities. Eg, for familiar topic use a search engine or meta search engine and for unfamiliar topic, use a subject directory as it allows you to browse through relevant links. Their strength and weakness, what are the limitations. After knowing all these, I begin to know which facilities to use when I am doing my research in the future.

Practical 3 Reflection

2339 in the night

Today I have to search for 4 other websites and classify them into different purposes of resource.

1st resource is electronic magazines at http://architecture.about.com/ . The purpose of resource is News. The reason being, the information display is being categorise in Architecture Ads, Topics such as design & build, Buyer’s Guide, Tools and Essential. There are different sets of information everyday, a constant update of news and information.

2nd resource is website at http://www.seksan.com/ . The purpose of resource is Business/marketing. The reason being, this website displays a list of project portfolio, resume, contacts of Seksan Design. Their works consist of commercial, township, hospitality, condominium, residential and park. It is trying to sell the design firm to the public by showing off their wonderful works.

3rd resource is journal at http://www.bldgblog.blogspot.com/ . The purpose of resource is Personal. The reason being, BLDGBLOG is written by Geoff Manaugh, sharing his personal thoughts of visualisation architecture to the public. This is his personal interest that he wants to share with the whole world about what will happen to architecture in the future.

Lastly the 4th resource is database at http://www.usarchitecture.com/ . The purpose of resource is Information. The reason being, this website gives information of anything that is related to architecture. It provides links to CAD software for drafting purposes, materials, flooring, ceiling, exterior wall, door, lightings etc. The link given will provide information on the category you chose to explore on.

Through the searching activity I have done today, I learnt how to categorise what is the purpose of the different resource. What a particular website offers what kind of information. It is important to differentiate the purpose of a resource so that you know what kind of information you are retrieving and whether it is revalent to you.

2255 in the night

My topic is discuss the developments of residential architecture.

Website 2 (organisational), http://www.scdaarchitects.com/web/index.html
This website displays a list of project portfolio, profile, people and contacts of SCDA Architects. Their works consist of houses, condominiums, hospitality, commercial/institutional, interior and master planning.

Website 3 (subject-based), http://www.residentialarchitect.com/
Home buildings news, home design ideas and building products for architects. This website provides a list of magazine issues (past and present). Their design awards, news and trend of design practice. Latest project specification, guides to manufacturers, articles and links. It also provides a forum for the public to pen down their discussions.

Websit 4 (personal), http://www.zaha-hadid.com/
A list of projects, publications, studio works, exhibition and galleries on Architect Zaha Hadid. She did residential project consisting of cultural, infrastructure, master planning and commercial.

Forums, http://students7.autodesk.com/?nd=m_ask
Architecture and Design, student engineering & design community forum. A forums where the public can post questions or answer the questions post by the public. The posts are being categories in vary topics in this forum.

The facilities I used is mainly google and yahoo.

The keywords I used for doing my research is development of residential architecture, residential architecture, residential architecture forum, santiago calatrava, scda, zaha hadid.
Sometime if I type just a word "architecture", the results I have is millions and millions of pages as it is too general, hence I need to type in more keywords like "development of residential architecture" in order for me to achieve more relevant and accurate results.

Personal websites are of an indivivual who publish he/she website. The information on a personal website is about an indivivual. Such as www.calatrava.com. In this website of an master architect, he published his work, portfolio and biograhy about himself. Whereas oraganisational and subject-based which do not have information on a person only. Oraganisational websites are websites belong to companies, oragansation or goverment. Which give nformation about the particular company, their background or contacts. Subject-based are websites containing information of news, updates, trends etc of a particular stuff, eg. sports, products, fashion.
